Michiel Schotten
Michiel is Chair and one of the founders of Dolcotec. He holds a Master of Science in Marine Biology from the University of Groningen. His research focuses on how wild dolphins communicate with each other and how they use echolocation, and for this purpose he has developed a unique 4-channel acoustic/video underwater recording system (see 4-channel UDDAS for details, as well as his publications).
Michiel spent several years in Hawaii at the Hawaii Institute of Marine Biology on Coconut Island, a small island off the coast of Oahu, to carry out the technical aspects of his research. Fieldwork with the system has been performed in The Bahamas with a population of Atlantic spotted dolphins and bottlenose dolphins, in collaboration with Dr. Denise Herzing of the Wild Dolphin Project.
Besides his passion for the potential of dolphin communication, Michiel’s skills and interests include working with electronics, bioacoustics, languages, philosophy, teaching, writing, ice skating and making music. Michiel currently works and lives with his family in The Netherlands.
