Mission statement

Mission statement

·        The mission of Dolcotec is fourfold:

1.        To promote scientific research into the possibilities of communication between humans and dolphins;

2.        To promote scientific research into the natural methods of communication among dolphins themselves in the wild;

3.        To globally increase public awareness of dolphins and delphinids as intelligent species;

4.        To promote measures which protect dolphin species in the wild and which conserve the marine environment in which they live.

·        Dolcotec has the philosophy that the above mentioned four missions are strongly intertwined and mutually enhance each other.

Policy

·        The policy of Dolcotec is aimed at realizing the above mentioned mission statement through, among others, the following activities in the long term:

1.        Performing, or assigning others to perform scientific research into the development of communication between humans and dolphins through an artificial interface;

2.        Developing, or assigning others to develop new technologies that make such communication between humans and dolphins possible;

3.        Performing, or assigning others to perform scientific research into the acoustic communication among dolphins in the wild;

4.        Developing, or assigning others to develop new technologies that make such research into the communication among wild dolphins possible;

5.        Eventually creating both film documentaries and other multi-media expressions, which will clarify and explain the results of the above mentioned scientific research to a large audience, and which will excite and inspire that audience in such a way that global public support for measures that protect delphinids and the marine environment will strongly increase.

6.        Eventually providing educational and promotional programmes at schools, through which the youth will be told about the above mentioned research on dolphins, about the marine environment in which they live, the human threats to which delphinids and the marine environment are currently being exposed, and what the youth can do themselves to protect delphinids and the marine environment as much as possible.

·        The policy of Dolcotec is further aimed at realizing the above mentioned long term activities through the following means:

1.        Fund-raising which is aimed at acquiring such financial means, that the above mentioned activities can be fully supported over a long continuous period of at least five years or longer.

2.        Building an international network of scientists from different disciplines (among others, marine biology, linguistics, psychology, bio-acoustics, computer science, etc.), who fully support the mission statement and actual policy of Dolcotec, and with whom can be collaborated internationally in one or several research projects simultaneously.  Dolcotec has the philosophy that such an interdisciplinary approach and exchange of expertise among different fields is a necessary condition for ultimately accomplishing its mission statement.

3.        Finding one or several facilities with dolphins where the research can be performed.  The main conditions which Dolcotec poses to such (a) facility (-ies) are:

A.     that a list of ethical requirements by Dolcotec (described elsewhere) is met, with regard to how the dolphins have been acquired and their living conditions; and

B.     that the facility is fully dedicated to the mission statement of Dolcotec, and is prepared to give priority to the research (with regard to the amount of available research time with the dolphins, as well as the availability of its dolphin trainers for the research), according to a previously agreed schedule, for a period of at least five years or longer.
